Last meal on Maui was had at another hipster-like joint, Paia Fish Market South Side. This was the Kihei branch of the apparently very popular fish restaurant. Options were quite aplenty, with fish burgers to fish entrees to the ubiquitous fish tacos and pastas.
We tried the Mahi mahi burger, I had the moon fish done cajun style and also a new england clam chowder.
New England Clam Chowder
The clam chowder was lovely, reminded me of the clam chowder breadbowls I had in San Francisco, but better. Clam flavours were rich and apparent in the creamy soup with chunks of poatoes and clam meat.
Cajun Spiced Moon Fish
My moon fish was thick and looked like a butterflied piece of chicken breast. Oddly enough, it also tasted like so. Slightly tough and dry meat. No sauce either, so it wasn’t very palatable. The rice was nicely seasoned though, and it was a very well sized plate of food.
Mahi Mahi Burger
The missus seemed to enjoy her mahi burger, also a thick slab, and unfortunately from what I noticed, also over cooked. Tasted like chicken breast, which is kind of a pitiful description of fish.
I think most of the fish I’ve had in Maui seemed to have suffered the same fate, something needs to be done to change the way fish is cooked in Maui, especially when you have such fresh produce, over-cooking them really doesn’t do the produce justice!
They do have quite a number of items on the menu though, so other food items might be better than what we tried.
