[TSK Eats Maui] Where to eat at Lahaina Town? Here’s my review of Kimo’s Restaurant

Mar 15, 2016

Our next step was Lahaina town. What a bustling place! There was definitely alot of energy going on in this town. It was a tough call to decide on where to eat in Lahaina town, but we finally picked Kimo’s restaurant for lunch.

Kim’s is a neat restaurant in Lahaina Town, Maui specialising in fish dishes, with a modern-looking hipster-ish menu.

To start, we had the macadamia crusted calamari. To my surprise, the calmari didn’t come in the usual calamari rings, but instead, strips resembling chicken tenders. Biting into them, they also kind of tasted like chicken tenders, which meant they lacked much squid flavour. Crispy, they were, but that was kind of besides the point already.

I had the Ono fish entree, served with rice, sauted asparagus with a sauce that that tasted quite pleasant.

Fish was fresh as expected since it was a catch of the day, but quite muscular, as in, it wasn’t as tender as a white fish such as flounder or cod, or it had been cooked to death. Shame.

My brother had the coconut crusted mahi, served with sauted french beans. It also came with a more generous slather of sauce, which made it much more palatable with rice. This was actually quite good, despite tuna being another tough fish when cooked.

The missus had the broke da mouth plate, a combo plate consisting of grilled teriyaki chicken, bbq ribs, jasmine rice and coleslaw. Definitely a crowd favourite. Ribs were fork tender and nicely paired with the sauce.

Grilled chicken was very disappointing though. Utterly bland chicken, grilled and then lightly brushed with a teriyaki sauce. They could have first marinated said chicken in said teriyaki sauce before grilling, and then applying another layer of sauce during/after grilling.

So the food was abit of a mixed bag, in terms of taste. However, they did sound very nice on paper and looked beautiful on plate.

After our meal there, we walked down a couple of shops and looked at the menu of Lahaina Fish Co. , it looked very promising as well, and we sorta regretted not having dined there instead. Perhaps you could try and let me know!
